Bragg family papers, 1836-1946.

The papers consist of correspondence, 1845-1938, received by Hosea and Samuel Bragg from relatives and friends in Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana; letters exchaned between Peter Newport Bragg and his parents while the former was attending the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1907-8 and during his World War I service while he was stationed at Camp Pike, Arkansas, Camp Jackson, South Carolina, and France. Other materials include genealogical notes, newspaper clippings, financial and legal documents pertaining to all of the generations of the Bragg family. Financial and legal documents also pertain to the operation of the family plantation and transactions involving slaves. Also included are printed materials, photographs, and maps created or collected by John Smith Bragg and pertaining to his World War II service in the Phillipines.

Pioneer Ouachita County, Arkansas, family. Samuel Newton Bragg (1802-1880) and Hosea Bragg (1804-1889) established small Arkansas plantations during the early 1840s after migrating from Alabama. Hosea's son, Walter Newport Bragg retained most of the old plantation while his own son, Peter Newport Bragg (1887-1963) went on to become an educator at Helena, Texarkana, and Fayetteville, Arkansas.
